Amphitheater

PLANTA León

The remains of the amphitheater have been discovered in Cascalerías Street, the building was facing the south facade and outside the camp. Its location was near the front door.

The research reveals that the building would have capacity for five thousand spectators. Surface reached the three thousand square meters and had fifteen levels of bleachers. It is believed that the amphitheater had no less than fifteen heights of terraces, which really would have seating for five or six thousand spectators.

Another findings is the fact that the amphitheater had several phases of construction and may have begun to lift in the first century, extending the works for more than a century. II was in AD when a second wall was built to support the structure, which would have stability problems.

A late third and early fourth, the walls of the arena began to be used for blocks of the wall. In addition, it is believed that the inhabitants of La Canna could use it to live inside as was the case of housing that many centuries later were attached to the wall.

What also seems clear is that the amphitheater was vaulted and the stands were built in wood. In the tastings have discovered dozens of objects, mainly ceramics and terra sigillata. However, no military elements have been found or currencies as in other excavations in the city. Source: Diario de León.
